FMM N. 650 & KJE N.1700

The model was first introduced in 1955 by FMM (The first time it appeared in a catalog was in the 1959 FMM catalog)

FMM Catalog 1959

The design of the knife is not original, it was very popular in the EUA, by the name of "Original Buffalo Skinner" with many variants made by multiple companies:  Solingen Cutlers such as Puma, Othello (A. Wingen Jr.) Linder, F.A Bower, C Schlieper (and many, many more) but I cannot verify who was the initial maker of this style of knife. Most probably, FMM saw an opportunity to do business in EUA and copied the popular model.

When FMM closed the knife business, the model is transferred to Hallin&Co. We can see it in the unpublished catalog of the company from 1962.

ABMorakniar unpublished catalog from 1961

The 650 finally ends up in the KJE catalog where it gets renumbered to 1700 with some modifications

On the bottom the FMM N. 650 and on top  KJE N.1700

KJE 1975 Catalogue.

The final production of this model was around 1985.

Length: 245mm | 9 5/8in

Blade: 140mm | 5 1/2in

Weight: 260gr | 0.573lbs

Curious knife: it used a FMM blade but with the handle of a KJE. Possible explications:  maybe some initial "oficial" product batch by KJE or maybe some KJE employ made it,  using the FMM blade (there are still production left overs in the Morakniv basement) with KJE handle

Blade

40mm long blade.

There is some question regarding FMM blade if they were laminated or not. Link

Handle

Initially, it had a leather stacked handle, with brass fittings.

All FMM stamped versions of these knives have leather stacked handles.

When KJE took over the model from FM Mattsson they redesigned it slightly, changing the grip from leather washers to jacaranda wood.

Sheath

Heavy-duty vegetable tanned leather was used with no dye, with a hunting scene of a dog chasing a fox. There is a small 55 inscribed in the drawing, indicated the year that it was introduced to the market.

Domnarvets Järnverk

Domnarvets Jernverk is a steel mill in Borlänge that has been part of SSAB since 1978 . Domnarvets Jernverk, which was built in 1872–78, was formerly part of Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB . In 1988, SSAB Tunnplåt AB was formed through a merger of Domnarvet's and also SSAB-owned Norrbottens Järnverk 's operations. In connection with this, the old name (Domnarvets Jernverk) disappeared, and the production unit in Borlänge is today called SSAB Tunnplåt Borlänge and belongs to SSAB EMEA AB.

Frost - 1891 - 2005

Erik Frost – Data unknown, my guess 1900-1920  Frost-Erik Ersson (or Frost Erik Eriksson)  was born in 1865-07-29 in the village of Östnor in a family of farmers. https://www.morahembygd.se/wp-content/stigsson/pee9624ac.html  In his childhood, he suffered child paralysis, his entire upper body and arms were attacked.  In 1887-06-07, Frost emigrated to the USA, like many others from his generation, to work as a lumberjack where we became known as Erik Frost.  In 1890,  Frost returned home and later in the year married Smids Anna Andersdotter (seven months before the first child Kristina was born) https://www.morahembygd.se/wp-content/stigsson/p786244cf.html . In total, they will have 8 children.  1891 also mark the year when he opened the sled and carriages factory called Erik Frost. See here a video of examples of similar style carriages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qvfw-QxuP50   Mentioned in the 120 Morakniv book “. According to Karl E...

Mors Kochanski

IN MEMORY OF Mors Kochanski (1940-2019) The legendary Mors Kochanski is considered by many to be the father of modern “bushcraft”. He has devoted his entire life to studying and teaching bushcraft and survival skills.  Mors is also an acclaimed author with many books published, among them the Northern Bushcraft (1988- ISBN 1-871890-30-6) the bible for those who study and practice these skills. He's saying “the more you know, the less you carry” has become a motto for the bushcraft community, and his knife preferences are an example of this.   To know more about his life visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mors_Kochanski or even better, listen to Paul Kirtley's podcast episode, where he interviews Mors https://paulkirtley.co.uk/2019/mors-kochanski-paul-kirtley-podcast/. Early in his career as a survival teacher, he and Tom Roycraft (probably late 1960s) put together the requirements of a basic yet practical knife for his students to use: blade around 4 fingers long, with a...

Cody Ludin

Photo credit Christopher Marchetti I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible opportunity Cody afforded me earlier this year. His willingness to spend time with me and record a video interview was truly a remarkable experience that I will cherish forever. The video in links bellow in the article.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvgZJciZBG4 A few months ago, I wrote a couple of articles about Mors Koshanki, who I believe introduced and popularized the Mora knife in the bushcraft, survival, and outdoor living skills scene, especially in North America. Can be found here  https://oldmora.blogspot.com/2021/12/Morskochanski.html and and  https://morakniv.se/en/morakniv-stories-en/in-memory-of-mors-kochanski-1940-2019/ However, Cody Lundin is another person who brought the Morakniv to the spotlight. Most people know Cody from his appearances on survival shows on TV, such as "Dual Survival" and "The Today Show". However, it was on "D...
